How to Create a UPI QR Code for Your Shop or Business

By Akash Gupta · Updated

To create a UPI QR code, type your UPI ID and the name customers should see into a UPI QR generator, add a fixed amount if you want one, and download the code to print or share. Customers scan it with Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, BHIM or any other UPI app, and the money goes straight to the bank account linked to your UPI ID. ToolKit360's generator is free, needs no sign-up and makes a static code that never expires. This guide covers the steps, printing it safely and the scams to watch for.

What a UPI QR code contains

A UPI QR code is simply a payment link stored as a picture. The link starts with upi://pay and carries a few fields that every UPI app understands:

FieldWhat it holdsNeeded?
paYour UPI ID, such as yourname@okbankYes
pnThe payee name shown to the customerRecommended
amA fixed amount in rupeesOptional
tnA note, such as Order 12Optional
cuThe currency, always INR for UPIYes

Because everything is inside the code, it is static: it keeps working without ToolKit360 or an account, and it never expires. The trade-off is that a printed code cannot be edited. To change the UPI ID, name or amount, make a new code.

How to make your UPI QR code

  1. Find your UPI ID in your UPI app, usually in your profile or account settings. It looks like name@okicici or 98xxxxxxxx@ybl.
  2. Open the UPI QR Code Generator. Type the UPI ID exactly in UPI ID, and the shop or person name in Payee name.
  3. Leave Amount empty so each customer types what they owe, or enter a fixed amount for a set price or fee. Add a Note if you like.
  4. Under Style, pick a colour theme, pattern and corner style. You can add your shop logo under "Logo & advanced"; error correction switches to High so it still scans.
  5. Choose a Download size of 512, 1024 or 2048 px and click Download PNG, or download SVG for sharp printing at any size.
  6. Scan the code with your own UPI app, check that your name appears, and make a small test payment, such as ₹1, from another person's phone before you print it.

One wrong character in the UPI ID gives a code that fails or, worse, pays someone else. The test payment is the surest way to know the money reaches you.

For invoices, our Invoice Generator can put a scan-to-pay code on the invoice itself. It fills in your UPI ID, the amount due and the invoice number, and appears only on rupee invoices with a balance due.

Printing and displaying it safely

  • Print it large enough to scan from a short distance; an SVG or the 2048 px PNG stays sharp at any size.
  • Print your shop or payee name in plain text next to the code, so customers can check that the name in their app matches before they pay.
  • Laminate it, or keep it behind clear plastic or glass, so nobody can stick a different QR code over yours. Check it every day for stickers or a swapped card.
  • Keep strong contrast: dark code on a light background. Pale colours and the Dots pattern are harder for some apps to read, so test after styling.
  • If you change banks or UPI ID, replace every printed copy at once.

Many small sellers use a personal UPI ID like this. Banks and UPI apps may set limits on personal accounts used for business, and a merchant account from your bank or a payment company can add features this code does not have, such as payment alerts or a speaker box. Ask your bank which suits you.

Scams to know about

UPI is safe when used the right way, but fraudsters use QR codes in a few well-known ways. Tell your staff about them too.

  • You never scan a QR code to receive money. If a buyer, a caller or someone on an online marketplace asks you to scan a code or enter your UPI PIN to get paid, it is a scam. Entering your PIN only ever sends money out of your account.
  • Fake payment screenshots. A customer shows a "payment successful" screen that is old or edited. Always confirm the payment in your own UPI app or bank SMS before handing over goods. Our code does not send alerts or play a sound.
  • Swapped or covered codes. Someone sticks their own QR over yours, and payments go to them. Lamination, a printed name and a daily check guard against this.
  • Fake refund or KYC calls asking you to scan a code or share an OTP. Banks and UPI apps do not ask for this.

Your UPI ID on its own can only receive money; nobody can take money out using it. Anyone who scans the code sees your UPI ID and payee name, so use a name you are happy to show.

Other QR codes for your shop

The same QR Code Generator makes codes for your Wi-Fi, WhatsApp, a contact card, a map location or a link to your menu or website, with the same styling options. They are all static and made in your browser.

Frequently asked questions

Is it free to make a UPI QR code here?

Yes. Making and downloading the code is free, with no sign-up, and ToolKit360 takes no fee or commission. Payments go directly from the customer's UPI app to your bank account.

Does the QR code work with Google Pay, PhonePe and Paytm?

Yes. It holds a standard UPI payment link (upi://pay) that UPI apps read, including Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm and BHIM. Scan it with your own app and make a small test payment before printing.

How will I know when a customer has paid?

Check your UPI app or the SMS from your bank. A static QR code works like your UPI ID written down, so it does not send alerts or play a sound. Never rely on the customer's screen alone.

Can I change the amount or UPI ID on a printed QR code?

No. The details are stored in the code itself, so a printed code cannot be edited. Make a new code with the new details and replace the old one everywhere it is displayed.

Is my UPI ID uploaded when I make the code?

No. The QR code is made in your browser, and your UPI ID, name and amount are not sent to a server or saved. Download the code before you leave the page.
