How to Merge PDF Files on Your Phone (Android & iPhone)

By Akash Gupta · Updated

To merge PDF files on your phone, open ToolKit360's Merge PDF page in Chrome, Safari or any mobile browser, tap Choose PDFs, pick two or more files, drag them into order and tap Merge PDFs, then Download. There is no app to install and no account, and the files are joined on your phone rather than uploaded to a server. The same steps work on Android and iPhone; the only real difference is where you find your files, which this guide explains, along with turning photos and scans into a PDF first.

How to merge PDFs on your phone

  1. Open the Merge PDF page in your phone's browser.
  2. Tap Choose PDFs and pick two or more PDFs. You can add more later the same way.
  3. Check the order. Files are merged top to bottom, and the number on each card is its position. Hold the grip on a card and drag it up or down to move it.
  4. If a file is sideways, tap its rotate button to turn it 90° clockwise. The copy button adds a file a second time.
  5. Tap Merge PDFs, then Download. The merged file is named after the first file, such as report-merged.pdf.

Open Merge PDF

Pages are copied as they are, not turned into images, so text stays sharp and can still be selected. The merged PDF is roughly the size of the files added together.

Finding your files on Android and iPhone

When you tap Choose PDFs, your phone opens its own file picker. What you see depends on the phone:

  • Android: the system file picker opens, usually showing Recent files and Downloads. Use the menu in the picker to switch to another folder or to Google Drive. To pick several files at once, press and hold the first one, then tap the others.
  • iPhone: the Files picker opens (if a menu appears first, choose Choose Files or Browse). Switch between Recents and Browse to reach On My iPhone, iCloud Drive and any other locations you have set up. Tap Select to choose several PDFs at once.
  • A PDF someone sent you on WhatsApp or email may not show up in the picker yet. Open it in that app and use Share or Save to keep a copy in Files or Downloads, then pick it.

When you download the merged PDF, Android usually saves it to Downloads. On iPhone, Safari saves it to the Downloads folder in the Files app, from where you can share it on WhatsApp or attach it to an email.

Adding photos and scans

Merge PDF only takes PDFs. If some of your pages are photos, such as the front and back of an Aadhaar card or a photographed form, turn them into a PDF first with JPG to PDF, then merge.

  1. Open JPG to PDF, tap Choose images and pick the photos from your gallery or files.
  2. Drag them into order with the grip on each card. Each photo becomes one page, the same size as the photo, and phone photos saved sideways come out upright.
  3. Tap Create PDF. Then use the add-to-files button next to the result to carry it into another PDF tool, or download it.
  4. Open Merge PDFs, add the new PDF along with your other PDFs, put them in order and merge.

Turn photos into a PDF

Only JPG and PNG images are accepted. If an iPhone photo is refused because it is HEIC, set the camera to Most Compatible under Settings, Camera, Formats for future photos, or convert the photo to JPG first. Photos go into the PDF at full size, so ten large phone photos make a large PDF; shrink them with the Image Resizer first if the form has a size limit.

Fixing single pages after merging

Merge PDF works with whole files. To move, turn or delete individual pages, tap the add-to-files button next to the merged PDF, then open Organize pages. You see a thumbnail of every page; drag a page to a new place, select pages to rotate or delete them, and tap Download PDF. Reset brings back the original order if you make a mistake.

Rearrange, rotate or delete pages

The PDF Suite has the other tools you may need on the same page, such as splitting a PDF, adding page numbers or signing it.

Limits and common problems

  • You need at least 2 PDFs, each up to 100 MB.
  • A PDF that needs a password to open, or is encrypted against editing, cannot be merged and is marked in the list. Remove the password in the app you used to set it, then add the file again.
  • The merged file is not compressed. If a form has a size limit, the PDF Compressor in the Universal Conversion Suite can make it smaller.
  • Bookmarks from the original files are not kept, and fillable form fields may stop being fillable.
  • Very large files or many pages can be slow on an older phone. Keep the page open until the download finishes.

Is it safe for ID documents?

Yes, as far as the merging goes. The files are joined inside your browser on your phone, so ID cards, marksheets, bank statements and agreements are not uploaded to ToolKit360 or anyone else, and nothing is kept after you leave the page. Once you have downloaded the result, the copy on your phone is like any other file, so share it only with the people who need it.

Frequently asked questions

Can I merge PDFs on my phone without an app?

Yes. Merge PDF runs in your phone's web browser, so you do not need to install an app, sign up or pay. It works in Chrome, Safari and other modern mobile browsers, and adds no watermark.

How do I change the order of PDFs on a phone?

Hold the grip on a file's card and drag it to its new place. The number on each card shows its position, and files are merged from top to bottom. Check the order before you tap Merge PDFs.

Can I merge photos and PDFs together?

Not in one step. Turn the photos into a PDF with JPG to PDF, use the add-to-files button or download it, then add that PDF to Merge PDFs with your other files and merge them.

Why is one of my PDFs marked and left out?

It is protected with a password or encrypted against editing, and merging rebuilds the PDF, which is not possible for such files. Remove the protection in the app that set it, then add the file again.

Where is the merged PDF saved on my phone?

On Android it usually goes to the Downloads folder. On iPhone, Safari saves it to Downloads in the Files app. From there you can open it, share it on WhatsApp or attach it to an email.
