Rules & Limitations

  • The 12% rate is only an example, not an offer. Personal loan rates vary widely with the lender and your credit score.
  • The rate must be a reducing-balance rate. If a lender or app quotes a flat rate, the real cost is much higher than the same number suggests.
  • Processing fees, GST on them, insurance and foreclosure charges are not included. A processing fee is often taken from the amount paid out, which raises the real cost.
  • Personal loans are usually fixed-rate, and many lenders charge a fee or set a lock-in period for closing early.

Personal Loan EMI Calculator FAQ

What is the EMI on a ₹3 lakh personal loan for 3 years?

At 12% a year it is ₹9,964 a month. You pay ₹58,715 in interest, so the total comes to ₹3,58,715.

What is the difference between a flat rate and a reducing rate?

A flat rate charges interest on the full loan for the whole tenure. ₹3 lakh at 12% flat for 3 years means an EMI of about ₹11,333, the same as roughly 21% on a reducing balance. Always compare reducing rates.

Is a shorter personal loan tenure better?

It costs less overall but needs a bigger EMI. For ₹3 lakh at 12%, 2 years means ₹14,122 a month and about ₹39,000 interest; 5 years means ₹6,673 a month but about ₹1 lakh interest.

Can I close a personal loan early?

Often yes, but many lenders charge a foreclosure fee or allow it only after some months. On the example loan, ₹5,000 extra a month finishes it 13 months sooner and saves ₹22,213 in interest, before any fee.

Does a processing fee change the cost of my personal loan?

Yes. The fee is usually deducted from the money you receive, while the EMI is worked out on the full loan, so the effective cost is higher than the rate. This calculator does not include fees.
