About Hindi OCR

Read Hindi (Devanagari) text from a scanned or photographed PDF and save it as a .txt file of Unicode Hindi that you can copy into Word, Google Docs or WhatsApp and edit. Hindi is already selected. Each page is rendered at high resolution and read on your own device, and a "--- Page n ---" line marks where each page starts. Because it reads the printed letters, it also works on PDFs made with old fonts such as Kruti Dev, whose text cannot be copied normally.

How to Use

1

Add your scanned PDF

Drop one or more PDFs on the page, paste them with Ctrl+V, or click Choose PDFs. Several PDFs are read one after another.

2

Check the language

Hindi is already selected under Language. If the document is mostly in English, switch to English for better results.

3

Run OCR

Press Run OCR. The first time, the OCR engine and the Hindi language data (a few MB) download from the jsDelivr CDN; then each page is read in turn while the progress bar shows which one.

4

Download the Hindi text

Click Download to save the file named like notice-ocr.txt, or Download all (ZIP) for several PDFs. Open it in any text editor or paste it into a document.

Privacy & Processing

  • Mode: hybrid
  • Files Leave Browser: Selected data may be sent to a service or peer
  • Max Input Size: 100 MB per file
  • Account Required: No
  • Data Stored Locally: Your files and the text are not saved. The browser caches the OCR engine and language data after the first download.
  • Network Processing: Required for connected features

Your PDF is read in your browser and is never uploaded. The OCR engine and Hindi language data are downloaded from the jsDelivr CDN on first use.

Rules & Limitations

  • One language per run. English words in a Hindi document may be misread; the two cannot be read together in one pass.
  • The first run needs an internet connection to download the OCR engine and Hindi language data from jsDelivr; your browser keeps them for next time. Your PDF itself is never sent.
  • Matras, half letters and conjuncts are the most common errors, especially on blurry, small or faded print. Handwritten Hindi is usually not read well. Check the text before you use it.
  • The output is a .txt file, not a searchable PDF or Word file; layout and tables are lost. A PDF that needs a password to open cannot be read. Up to 100 MB per PDF.

Hindi OCR FAQ

How do I convert a scanned Hindi PDF to text?

Add the PDF; Hindi is already chosen under Language. Press Run OCR, wait while each page is read, then click Download to save the Hindi text as a .txt file.

Can it read Hindi and English in the same document?

Only one language is used per run. With Hindi selected, Devanagari is read best and English words may come out wrong. If English matters too, run the PDF a second time with English and combine the two results.

Will the Hindi text be in Unicode?

Yes. The text file is saved as UTF-8 Unicode, so it displays correctly in Word, Google Docs, WhatsApp and email, and you can type or edit it with a normal Hindi keyboard.

Can I convert a Kruti Dev PDF to Unicode Hindi?

Yes. Copying text from such PDFs gives jumbled English letters, but OCR reads the printed Devanagari from the page image instead, so the result is ordinary Unicode Hindi.

How accurate is Hindi OCR?

On a clear, straight scan of printed text it reads most words correctly, but matras, half letters and conjuncts are often mistaken, and small or faded print gives more errors. Always proofread important text.

Is my Hindi document uploaded for OCR?

No. The OCR engine runs in your browser and reads the pages on your device. Only the engine and Hindi language data are downloaded from jsDelivr, the first time.
